Ludovico Caracciolo (1761 Rome - 1842 ) after Henry Wilkins (1767 - 1847 ): Ancient city wall of Pompeii North side of the city on the Gulf of Naples, 1819, Aquatint


Technique: Aquatint on Paper


Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "H. Wilkins del. / L. Caracciolo inc.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Murs de la ville". At the lower part further inscription: "Auf der Nordseite der Stadt".


Date: 1819


Description: The depiction shows the fortifications of the lost city of Pompeii under a clear sky, embellished by the sunrise and lush vegetation. Delicate silhouettes of human and animal figures blend harmoniously into the scenery, whose atmosphere suggests tranquillity and grandeur.

Condition
Rather good condition. Foxing visible on the entire sheet. Heavier staining along the edges. The lower right corner of the sheet has a slight liquid stain. Small liquid stain in the top centre. The left edge of the sheet is slightly damaged due to detachment from a book binding.
