Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes (Paquime) culture, ca. 1150 to 1450 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of spherical form with a gently rounded midsection, a tapered shoulder, and a thick rim with a pair of suspension loops. The stone-burnished exterior bears intricate and abstract geometric motifs in black and red pigment, with some elongated triangles exhibiting circular interior spots that resemble eyes. During the 14th and 15th centuries, Paquime, also known as Casas Grandes, played a pivotal role in facilitating trade and fostering cultural connections between the Pueblo culture in the southwestern United States, northern Mexico, and Mesoamerica. Professional repair and restoration to areas of base and lower body, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Minor abrasions, light pitting, and fading to original pigment in scattered areas, otherwise in nice condition. Great preservation to decorations across exterior. Previous inventory label beneath base.
