Description: Greek Epistolae. Translated from Latin with annotations. Editor & Animator Tertia Edition. Through Aristaenetus (d. c. 5th or 6th CE) Marcum Orry, Paris, 1610. Dimensions: 4.5 by 7" Engraved bookplate of the Earl of Jersey, text printed in Greek and Latin on facing pages, bound in complete original vellum over boards, title page with ownership inscription in period pen, Victor Albert George Child Villiers inside front board Excellent condition, a little foxing here and there. This collection of fictitious, sexual, and humorous letters, inspired by classical examples from older times, is what Aristaenetus left us. "Aristaenetus astonishes us with tales of paramours concocting intricate plans to fulfill their wants, with cunning go-betweens assisting in the process. He tells us stories of adulterous partners who commit heinous and hilarious infidelity and just about escape detection." (Extracted from the 2014 English translation of Peter Bing and Regina Höschele, which was released by the Society of Biblical Literature.) A famous Greek epistolographer from antiquity, Aristaenetus lived in the fifth or sixth century. There are two books of love stories in the form of epistolary fragments attributed to him; the themes are taken from the sensual elegies of writers from Alexandria, such as Callimachus, and the language is a jumble of expressions from Plato, Lucian, Alciphron, and other writers.
