Greek statesman and orator Demosthenes lived from 384 until October 12, 322 BC, in ancient Athens. His speeches offer a valuable window into the politics and culture of ancient Greece in the fourth century BC and are a noteworthy statement of the intellectual power of the contemporaneous Athenians. Demosthenes studied the speeches of eminent orators in the past to understand eloquence. At the age of 20, he made his first appearance before a judge, effectively arguing that he should inherit what remained of his fortune from his guardians. Demosthenes worked for a while as a lawyer and a professional speechwriter (logographer), crafting speeches for use in individual court cases.
