His comedies were initially presented in the period between 170 and 160 BC. A Roman senator named Terentius Lucanus took Terence to Rome as a slave, educated him, and then, after being impressed with his skills, set him free. At the age of twenty-five, Terence suddenly passed away, most likely from a shipwreck or illness while returning to Rome from Greece. It was said that he was traveling to discover new stories for his comedy to be based on. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, his plays were widely utilized as a means of teaching Latin, and Shakespeare even occasionally copied them. "Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto," or "I am human, and I think nothing human is alien to me," is one of Terence's most well-known quotes. Heauton Timorumenos, his play, featured this.
