Description
East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. early to mid-19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden war fan known as a gunbai used to signal soldiers and direct troop movement from afar. The heart-shaped fan head has an integral handle rod protruding from both ends, a golden-hued central symbol, and black lacquer covering most other surfaces. Petite nacre chips are scattered across the surfaces to create trees and 2 figures on 1 side as well as 4 faded Kanji characters on the verso. A modern cloth tassel is bound to the end. Size: 1.1" L x 10.3" W x 20.9" H (2.8 cm x 26.2 cm x 53.1 cm)

Condition
Fading to pigment, with chipping to some nacre bits, and minor abrasions, otherwise intact and very good. Cloth tassel is a modern replacement. Great presentation.
