An Important Wari (Huari) Sceptered Mirror Peru, c. 650-1100 AD The elegantly carved wood circular frame atop a long handle holds a pyrite mosaic mirror in the cavity. At top are two vicunas, a camelid species of the Andes. Six triangles radiate out from the sides. The whole an elegant scepter with mace-like knobs. In excellent, intact condition, the mirror restored using associated, ancient pyrite. On a custom stand. Note: A mirrored scepter such as this was used by the ancient Andeans to reflect light into dark caves and temples. Because this one is so skillfully crafted and sculptural it was most likely also a prestige item, conferring high status on its owner.
