lot of 5 large format albumen photographs, all mounted on slightly larger original card stock with inked manuscript captions. Four of them have blindstamp in lower left corner of J. Davis, Samoa. John Davis was a British photographer living and working in Samoa and his assistant Alfred John Tattersall, a New Zealander. All these photographs were take by one of these two. The three larger images are 7 x 9 inch on larger card stock and captions include H.I.M.S. Adler after Hurricane Apia March 16th 1889 (20 souls lost) and shows the SMS Adler lying on its side on the reef in Apia harbor with village and mountain in background; next caption reads: Wreck of Trenton & Vandalia, bow of Eber, wreck of Adler to the left Samoans Engaged in transporting Trento's & Vandalia's guns from the beach to the Monongahela. The last of the larger photos caption reads: Trenton's Yards on beach, bow of Eber, stern of the Trenton, Adler on the Reef. The next image is 5 x 7¾ inches on larger card stock with inked caption reading: Bows of the Trenton & Vandalia, H.I.M.S. Sophie, H.B.M. Opal, USS Monongahela. The last image is also 5 x 7 ¾ inch but on black card stock with inked caption on reverse reding: The Trenton & Vandalia As seen June 1889 Wrecked March 16th 89 Apia Samoa.
