Description
Two works by Yukio Mishima, including FIVE MODERN NO PLAYS (1957, 1st American edition, in jacket) and MADAME DE SADE (1968, 1st British edition, in jacket.) Jacket of second title with stain to front and price-clipped, else both are Near Fine. ************************** Each signed and inscribed by Mishima on ffe. Madame de Sade inscribed "There is a stain of truth in this old ball gown. Yukio Mishima", and Five Modern No Plays inscribed, "With love and a hug. Yukio Mishima." Both books from the Shuttleworth estate. Martin Shuttleworth (of The Paris Review) entertained many authors, and his son, Jason James Shuttleworth, took an immediate liking to Mishima (who reciprocated this interest.) Jason James ("James") made numerous visits to Japan to visit Mishima, and they shared a correspondence. The family is unsure of the exact nature of the relationship between the two, but there were indications that Yukio and James were romantically involved. These books, as the other Mishima books in this catalogue, are from the collection of James Shuttleworth.
