Description
Two works by Yukio Mishima, including THE TEMPLE OF THE GOLDEN PAVILION (1959, first British edition, in jacket) and AFTER THE BANQUET (1963, first British edition, in jacket.) First and second title with light foxing to first few leaves and page ends, and very light wear to jacket of first title. Second title with light foxing to page ends but Near Fine otherwise. ********************************************* Each signed and inscribed. The Temple of the Golden Pavilion signed on half-title, "From Yukio, With Love." After the Banquet inscribed on half-title, "Happy Birthday to a Handsome Young Friend, Yukio Mishima." Both books from the Shuttleworth estate. Martin Shuttleworth (of The Paris Review) entertained many authors, and his son, Jason James Shuttleworth, took an immediate liking to Mishima (who reciprocated this interest.) Jason James ("James") made numerous visits to Japan to visit Mishima, and they shared a correspondence. The family is unsure of the exact nature of the relationship between the two, but there were indications that Yukio and James were romantically involved. These books, as the other Mishima books in this catalogue, are from the collection of James Shuttleworth.
