Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) Abolitionist, poet. Howe was the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". She was inspired to write the song after she and her husband visited Washington, D. C., and met Abraham Lincoln at the White House.. The song became one of the most popular songs of the Union during the American Civil War. 8” x 5” autograph quote signed, the fifth stanza of The Battle Hymn of the Republic: “In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born/ across the sea,/With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me/ As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free/ While God is marching on. Julia Ward Howe May 1896”. There is considerable fading, but the text and signature are clearly legible.
