Description
Thirteen (13) World War I U.S. Military equipment items, belonging to First Lieutenant James A. Newman, 51st Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division. 1st item: One (1) Brodie helmet with painted red six pointed star of the 6th Infantry Division, front center. Inscribed "James A. Newman - 1st Lt.", across chin strap. 4 3/4" H x 11" W x 12" D. 2nd item: One (1) U.S. Army Officer's canvas bedroll with metal buckles, stenciled "James A. Newman./1st Liuet. 51st Inf./U. S. A.", three times, across front. Approximately 114 1/4" H x 96" W. 3rd item: One (1) U.S. Army Signal Corp flag kit, with four flags, two wooden poles, and three metal and wood poles. Two flags inscribed "A. Bernard", one with "M.O. 6th Inf.", lower corner. Housed in a olive canvas bag with metal buckles and shoulder strap. Flags approximately 21 1/2" H x 24" W. Wooden poles - 24" L. Metal and wood poles - 23" L. Bag - 25 1/2" H x 5 1/4" W x 3 3/4" D. 4th item: One (1) U.S. Army Officer's Visor cap. 4 5/8" H x 10" W x 10 1/2" D. 5th item: One (1) brown canvas bag with leather straps and metal buckles, stenciled "Jas A. Newman./1st Lieut. 51st Inf.", front. Approximately 17" H x 17" W x 3 1/4" D. 6th-8th items: Three (3) canvas infantry leggings or gaiters, with metal fasteners and buckles. Approximately 18" H x 6 1/4" W. 9th item: One (1) U.S. Army bayonet with wooden grip and scabbard. Star symbol stamped on blade near crosspiece. Blade - 15 3/4" L. Scabbard - 16 1/2" L. Overall - 21" L. 10th item: One (1) canvas bag stamped "338 H.Q." with two sewn on rope ties, 27 1/2" H x 7 1/4" W. 11th item: One (1) pair of leather boots with hobnails, bottom of soles and heels. Approximately 4 1/4" H x 4 1/4" W x 11" D. 12th-13th items: Two (2) rolls of olive wool, bound with canvas cord. 4" H x 3 1/2" dia. Circa 1917-1918. Provenance: the collection of the late James A. Condition
Overall good condition considering age in manner in which items were used. 1st item: Areas of rust/oxidation to be expected from age. Original straps, lining present. 2nd-3rd items: Areas of staining, tears, to be expected from age and manner in which it was used. 4th item: Scattered holes, largest 1", surface and underside of cap. 5th-13th items: Items in worn condition.
