Item Details
Description
Morris Gaylord Broderson (American, 1928-2011), "Pieta" oil painting, 1960. Signed and dated on the lower left by the artist. Morris Broderson was an artist who worked in a variety of media, including watercolor, pastel, and oil. In his early works, Broderson engaged with allegorical themes such as the Crucifixion and the Pieta as we see in this example - note how Crosses serve as daggers piercing Mary's heart as she carries her Son in the bleak landscape of grey, black, and white hues. Morrison was also inspired by poet Garcia Lorca and Kabuki legends. Later works represent both common and relatively exotic subjects, flowers, textiles, vases, and portraiture. Broderson's images conjure layered associations and references, and his religious compositions also resonate with humankind's emotive response to the world. Size: 49.875" L x 36" W (126.7 cm x 91.4 cm); 50.625" L x 36.75" W (128.6 cm x 93.3 cm) framed

Born deaf, Broderson attended the Berkeley School for the Deaf in Berkeley, California. When he was 14 years old, his aunt Joan Ankrum, a gallery owner, noticed his artistic talent and introduced him to Francis DeErdeley, the Director of the Pasadena Art Institute. DeErdeley recognized the young Broderson's immense talent, agreed to mentor him, and eventually encouraged him to leave junior high school in order to attend the University of Southern California, Los Angeles where DeErdeley taught art. Broderson's honors included New Talent USA from "Art in America" and First Prize and Purchase at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His work has been exhibited at the M.H. De Young Museum, San Francisco, and the University of Arizona, Tucson. His work has also been collected by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City, and the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C., among others.
