Leon Gischia (France/Italy, 1903-1991), "Femme a la Cruche" (Woman with a Jug), color lithograph on Guilde de la Gravure paper, ca. 1953. An original lithograph in colors, signed in pencil on the lower left and numbered 48/200 on lower right. A colorful abstract composition depicting two women carrying water vessels on their heads. Gischia was among the pioneer artists of the post-war Jeune Ecole de Paris. In 1923, he enrolled at the Academie Moderne and studied with Fernand Leger and Othon Friesz. Gischia collaborated with Leger, Le Corbusier, and Mazenod on the Pavillon des Temps Nouveaux at the International Exposition in 1937. During 1938, he had his first one-man exhibition at Jeanne Bucher on Boulevard Montparnasse - a respected avant-garde gallery. In 1939, Gischia's work was featured at Galerie Alfred Poyet, catapulting him to the forefront of the Parisian artistic scene. Over the next few years Gischia would play a major role in the post-war avant-garde community. Paper has embossed stamp of "GUILDE DE LA GRAVURE" on lower left. Signed in pencil on the lower left and numbered 48/200 on lower right. Paper shows some toning, losses to edges, and foxing at lower edge (does not interfere with the image). This piece is wrapped in cellophane and has not been examined outside its wrapping. There is a printed biography statement taped to the cellophane over the verso. Cellophane could easily be removed.
