Rare Antique Daily Citizen Civil War 1863 Newspaper
Item Details
Description
An amazing and very rare Vicksburg, Mississippi Daily Citizen newspaper page printed on wallpaper from homes destroyed in the Civil War. Paper was in very short supply during the Union siege. Dated July 2, 1863, Vicksburg surrendered to Union forces two days later on July 4th. When Union soldiers raided the newspaper office, they found this page still typeset. They added the last paragraph, noting this would be the last “wallpaper” edition, and sold copies as souvenirs. Newspaper measures 15.675in x 8.875in; frame measures 23in x 16in. Our auction estimate on this piece is 10 to 10000. Holly CNX 1014 1386.
Condition
Displays some surface wear and discoloration commensurate with age; unsure if newspaper was in four pieces at time of printing or if this is later; piece has not been examined out of frame
