Patterson gives a concise yet fairly detailed overview of the activities of the 15th Illinois Regiment from its muster into U.S. Service on May 24, 1861, to the resignation of its colonel, due to health reasons, on November 8, 1862. Included are accounts of action, movement, amid a bit of camp life.
Among them are: "...Disembarked at Pittsburg Landing on March 17th. Here took a prominent part in the Battle of Shiloh, having five hundred men engaged and losing one hundred and ninety fourin killed and wounded..." "On the last three days of August, took part in an expedition, having for its object the dispersion of a guerillas force on Noucamah Creek... This expedition... resulted in the total rout of the enemy and the capture of thirty prisoners..."
