Description
Central Europe, Germany/Austria, ca. 19th century CE. A remarkable, beautifully preserved 18K gold signet ring with its band made of entwined gold that resembles a twisted grapevine. Set into the ring is a large bloodstone intaglio bearing a crest and Latin inscription - presumably a family motto - that is in reverse, so that the ring could be used as a stamp for sealing documents in wax. The bloodstone itself is a beautiful color, appearing black with red inclusions in ordinary light, but glowing a deep forest green when exposed to bright light. The crest features a crown, indicating that this belonged to a "noble" family - a count, a duke, or similar. The shield of the crest is flanked by lions, while a banner below contains the Latin. Size: 0.45" W x 0.65" H (1.1 cm x 1.7 cm); gold is 18K; total weight is 7.8 grams; US ring size 7.5
