AN ANTIQUE MAP, "Orrientalior Districtus Maris Mediterranei, t'Oofter gedeelte van de Middelandse Zee," AMSTERDAM, 1675-1680, hand colored engraving on paper, a page fragment, printed for Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas by Frederik de Wit (1630-1706), plate 14, and hand numbered U/R 138, with U/R list of 111 Mediterranean island or port town names, flanked by a figural title cartouche with a seated Roman minstrell singing over partially buried Hellenistic ruins, a Sicilian sword fighter with shield, a Venetian merchant, and various figures of the Ottoman empire, pictured with five 17th century ships at sea, the whole overlaid with rhumb lines issued from thirteen windstars, and including two compass roses. 18 1/2" x 23" Note: The present map showing the coastlines of Corsica, Tuscany, Sicily, Sardinia, Venice, Greece, Algeria, Anatolia, Egypt, Syria, Tunisia and Tripoli. A good example of the Mediterranean coastal activity in the last quarter of the 17th century. Provenance: Property from a Corporate Art Collection.
Condition
Some foxing throughout, waving of paper, paper joined as issued, previously ironed out, but overall in good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
