Description
AN ANTIQUE MAP, "Regnum Hungaria," AMSTERDAM, 1683-1699, hand colored engraving on paper, a fragment from an atlas, printed by Frederik de Wit (1630-1706) showing the lands of Hungary subdivided by vassal territories or Comitatus, surrounded by partial territories of the Archiducatus of Austria, Styria, Sclavia, Croatia, Bosnia, Poland, and Moravia, a title cartouche with a winged figure of victory crowning the Hungarian Coat of Arms banner stands over a personification of the Holy League formed in 1864 defeating a Turkish soldier. 19" x 23" Note: The present map has had some dating inconsistencies, however the two grappling figures in the title cartouche, likely personifying The Holy League, may reveal a wealth of information. Pope Innocent IX established the Holy League after the Battle of Vienna, September 12, 1863.  Members of the Holy League included the Papal States, the Holy Roman Empire under Habsburg Emperor Leopold I, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth of John III Sobieski, the Venetian Republic, and finally the Tsardom of Russia. Organized by Pope Innocent XI to oppose the Ottoman Empire in the Great Turkish War fought from 1683-1699. The symbolism of the cartouche perhaps helps to reveal a more concise date range for the viewer. The alliance lasted until the Treaty of Karlowitz brought an end to the Turkish War in 1699. The unparalleled victory for Christendom over the Ottoman Empire is well represented in this cartouche cartoon. Evidence points to that this map was issued shortly after the initial formation of the Holy League circa 1683/1684 or after, but not before. The importance of the Commonwealth and the Holy Roman Empire alliance and subsequent defeat the Ottoman Empire was a turning point for western history. Provenance: Property from a Corporate Art Collection.
