Henry Clay ALS Mentioning Interesting U.S./Canada Law Case & Future of American Banks, with 1844 Campaign Badge

A 2-piece lot relating to Henry Clay (1777-1852), one of the most well-known politicians in the early- to mid-nineteenth-century American landscape, including an ALS and campaign page.

The lot includes:

1. 1p ALS fully engrossed by Clay, and signed by him as "H. Clay" at center right. Written in Washington, D.C. on July 18, 1841 and addressed to Willis Hall (1801-1868), a New York attorney and Clay supporter. Bearing a gorgeous and nearly fully intact green wax seal with Clay's initials found at center. Expected folds, else near fine. 8" x 10".

In part:

"Thanks, my dear sir, for the opinion in the McLeod case. We have not yet emerged from our Bank difficulties. Some entertain hopes of a compromise, so as to admit od an efficient bank. Nous verrons. [French translation: "We shall see."]

In the Senate we have a majority for a Bankrupt law. It is not so certain in the House…"

Clay's reference to "the McLeod case" related to the People v. Alexander McLeod (1841). Canadian citizen McLeod was arrested in the United States on charges of murder and arson after he participated in the raid of an American vessel supplying munitions to Canadian rebels in 1837. McLeod was later found not guilty. The case provided an unprecedented defense for foreign nationals, who could claim crimes they committed fell under the authority of a foreign sovereign.

2. A silk ribbon printed with Clay's image at center and other campaign slogans, such as "Harry of the West" and "The Farmer of Ashland. /Honor to whom Honor is due", prepared in advance of the Young Men's Whig National Convention in Baltimore, Maryland on May 2, 1844. Isolated light stains and loose threads, else near fine.

In 1844, Clay was nominated as the Whig Party presidential candidate along with running mate Theodore Frelinghuysen. Though they were narrowly defeated by Democratic candidates James K. Polk and George Dallas, Clay would try and fail to secure the Whig presidential nomination again in 1848.
