Description
Southwestern USA, central Arizona to the Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico, Salado Culture, ca. 1275 to 1450 CE. A round bowl with a corrugated motif immediately under the rim on the exterior. Pottery of this style was made using the coil-and-scrape method, with the surface of the bowl smoothed by sandstone, slipped, polished, and then decorated before firing. Black paint was made from iron, manganese, or charred organic materials. Bowls like this one often have a lifeline of dark paint around the rim. This pottery type had one of the widest ranges of any in the ancient Southwest, traded across hundreds of miles and used in the household, ceremonies, and burials. Size: 5.5" W x 2.5" H (14 cm x 6.4 cm)
