Rare photograph collection of the Tangkhul Naga Tribes (& Lushai, Kuki & Jaintia tribes) living on the India-Burma border during the first half of the 20th century.
Pen and pencil titles with inscribed location and descriptions of each photo on verso, including Paul Popper studio stamp; London, England.
Images depicting, village life, hair cuts, trading, tribes in valley, harvest, landscapes, superstitions, etc.
Highlights include: Government agents displeasure of tribal disregard of the edict against Head-Hunting- Naga Chief known to have dozens of human heads in defiance of the Government; a tribal house which warns visitors of contagious disease, devastated village main street where spirits reside SPIRIT TREE; Paddy Terraces; Incredible chief homes; Chief with his two wives; trees in which spirits reside, men waiting for hair cuts; etc.
Approximately 150 silver gelatin press style prints. Image size: 90mm x 120mm (3.54 in. x 4.72 in.) or smaller.
Condition: very good condition.
Provenance: British family.
