Description
Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279)
Thickly potted, with a slight groove below the rim, covered overall with a green glaze with dark blue spots, the glaze stopping above the foot, revealing the buff colored stoneware body, the base with an incised mark.
H. 2 3/4 in., D. 4 9/16 in.
Note: The intrinsic qualities of Jian bowls made them particularly suited for tea preparation and enjoyment. In size and form they were comfortable to hold. Their heavy potting had an insulating effect, keeping the tea inside hot while protecting the fingers from the heat. Additionally, Jian bowls were made in the same province as the empire’s prized teas.
Provenance: A Columbus, Ohio Collector, Purchased 1981-1994.
