Description
First half 19th century, 234 x 149 cm, South West Caucasus
This is an early example of a specific Sevan group in which the green shield medallion surrounded by a wide white outline is a design bar extending across the whole length of the field. Its box-shaped centre encloses a red vertical cartouche, and it ends in octagonal extensions. These octagons are filled with stars in only the oldest pieces. The Turkmen kochanak designs of the main border are a common feature shared by this group. – Signs of age and wear, low spots in the pile, a number of old repairs and small repiled sections. The original finishes survive all around.
HERRMANN, EBERHART, Seltene Orientteppiche VII. Munich 1985, no. 28 *** KESHISHIAN, HAROLD M. (ed.), The Treasure of the Caucasus. Rugs from American Collections. Washington 1992, pl. 4 *** RIPPON BOSWELL, A 49, 23 May 1998, lot 186
