North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A utilitarian tool made from volcanic stone for shaping and sanding other stone, coral, or shell tools. The implement has a conical handle area with shallow indentations or grooves on both sides for gripping. The underside of the face is flattened, perhaps from pounding or filing. Size: 3" L x 2.75" W (7.6 cm x 7 cm)
