English sack back Windsor chair with extensive decorative carving on nearly all surfaces, the number or date1676 carved on the pierced splat, a botanical urn of flowers on the seat, leaves and flowers on the bow, arms, legs and stretchers. The carving in a kind of folk Gothic style. Bottom of seat with old paper label for "J.J. Allen, Ltd., Furniture Depositories, Bournemouth," and stamped with the name "Capt. H. G. Archer". (A Captain H. G. Archer is found in London in 1919.) J.J. Archer made furniture beginning in 1860 and appears also to have retailed antique furniture.
