Description
A very fine and rare antique silk with silver thread Saltillo complete Poncho Blanket. Circa. 1865. The slit for the head was created during the weaving process and not pre-cut afterwards. This poncho has been woven in one panel - an unusual and rare aspect in a Saltillo poncho weaving. Handwoven in the Maximilian Period in the First Half of 19th century - where repeated eight-pointed stars in the border and flower motifs in the centre of this piece originate from this period, often combined in odd ways with traditional patterns. Finely woven with wool, silk and metal thread wefts on a cotton warp. This type of Saltillo weave from northern Mexico is among the worlds most intriguing textiles. An extremely fine weave and soft wool. Size: 2.00m x 1.03m (79ins x 41ins) This item ships from the UK. A similar item is held in the Fred Harvey Collection, International Folk Art Foundation Collection, Museum of International Folk Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Fred Harvey piece is enscribed in the end border: Epifanio Jemenez, probably the patron for whom it was woven. Please note: this Lot can be viewed in person at The Oriental Rug Gallery Ltd 82 Wey Hill, Haslemere, Surrey GU27 1HS in the UK by Appointment Only - 10am to 4pm from 22nd to 24th of May inclusive, and will ship from this UK address.
