Description
Wilfred P. Cohen (American, 1899-1992) Painting. Title - New York Cityscape. Modern abstract oil on canvas painting in rich saturated colors with bold assertive brush strokes. Painting is from the Sag Harbor, NY estate of Wilfred Cohen. Included with the painting is a similar cityscape greeting card along with an original photo with moisture damage of the artist with his wife. Painting measures 24 inches high, 30 inches wide. Frame measures 25 inches high, 31 inches wide. In good condition.

Obituary from New York Times - November 21, 1992. Wilfred P. Cohen, a retired men's-clothing executive and philanthropist who helped hospitals, universities and other causes, died on Thursday at his home in Sands Point, L.I. He was 93 years old. For more than 30 years, Mr. Cohen headed Joseph H. Cohen & Sons in Manhattan, manufacturers of men's suits and sport coats. In 1956 he sold the company, which became part of Botany 500.

He was a founder and trustee of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, Long Island Jewish Hospital in New Hyde Park, L.I., and North Shore University Hospital-Cornell University Medical College in Manhasset, L.I.

Mr. Cohen was also a founder and president of Temple Beth-El in Great Neck, L.I. He endowed a chair in Judaic studies at Brandeis University and contributed to the Whitney Museum of Art and the American Friends of Hebrew University, among other causes.

An accomplished artist, he assisted art students through the Wilfred P. Cohen Foundation, financed by more than $100,000 he donated from sales of his paintings.

Mr. Cohen was born in New York City. In World War I, he served briefly in the Navy. After attending City College and New York University, he joined his family's company as a salesman.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, the former Rose Junger; three daughters, Susanne Olin of Roslyn, L.I.; Barbara Freedman of Manhattan; Alice C. Bennett of Peconic Point, L.I.; a son, Paul of Boston; a sister, Mildred Fink of Ossining; 14 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
