ANS, one page on 3.25x2in. card, dated August 18, 1863, reading in full: "Sec. of Treasury, please / see this lady who says / she is wife of a preacher / who is in the war as a / Captain in the 126th N.Y. / She wants employment. / Aug. 18th, 1863 A. Lincoln", the reverse of the card appears the name Mrs. Winfield [Scott?].

The note is toned in the center, less toned on the edges where it was apparently mounted in the past, it is contained in a small sleeve with corner mounts, further mounted to an 8.5x11in. white card stock comprising assorted notes including an indication that the Lincoln note was framed at one time (with the yellowed typed note mounted below being part of the back dust cover).

Another note cites the acquisition (see provenance), to the reverse of the card stock are notations inferring that the captain?s / preacher's wife is Mrs. Winfield Scott, the script in red reading in part: "There was a Capt. Winfield Scott in the 126th + I have the information on him on the following page. It was his wife who was seeking help from President Lincoln.", the reverse also contains 2 mounted CDV's, one of Abraham Lincoln, the other of his assassin John Wilkes Booth.

Provenance: Part of a civil war collection of a Sullivan County, NY gentleman 90 years young. The collection spans 50 years. Owner?s note at bottom of card stock reads: "I bought this Lincoln piece on May 2, 1994, from a Charles Southworth. He got it from a family who said that their father had bought it from an auction in the 1920ties!"
