Item Details
Description
Compelling carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph of a young African American man taken in New Orleans. The verso bears the imprint of M.J. Hinton, a photographer who operated a studio called the “Crescent Gallery” on Camp Street from 1865-1866. The subject is a younger man in a dapper suit and bowtie. Why he visited a photographer in the Garden District is currently unknown, but he seemed dress to impress. The image has been trimmed on the bottom and right edges, likely to fit inside an album.
