ANTON KRATOCHVIL
Antonin Kratochvil, was born in the Czech Republic. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography, at the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy, in Amsterdam. Over the last 40 years he has photographed political upheaval and human catastrophe, while continuing to document complex human, political and social relationships. He has photographed Mongolian street children and also made a portrait with David Bowie. He covered the war in Iraq for Fortune magazine and also photographed Debbie Harry for an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) campaign. His work has appeared in several international magazines and newspapers. He has published six books: Broken Dreams: 20 Years of War in Eastern Europe (Monacelli Press, New York, 1997); Antonin Kratochvil (Torst, 2003); Incognito (Arena Editions, 2001): Supravvivere (Motta Editore, Italy 2001); Vanishing (de.MO 2005) and Persona: Portraits. (Slovart, 2006). He is the recipient of grants including Hasselblad Foundation Grant for Photography (1995), Ernst Haas Working Grant (1994), Mother Jones International Fund for Photography; and Aperture Publishing Grant (2004). Kratochvil has also been honored with several awards including the Infinity Award for Photojournalist of the Year, (International Center for Creative Photography, 1991); Dorothea Lange prize (Duke University,1994); Leica Medal of Excellence; three World Press Photo First Prizes; and the Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Photojournalism (2005).
