Gilt bronze McClellan-style soldier's ID badge. Obverse with profile bust portrait of General George McClellan with original legend: "Maj. Gen. G. [M.] McClellan / Peninsular Campaign" and additionally stamped, “J.H Trone. Waynesboro. P.A. / Co. G 17th P.A. CAVLY." Reverse stamped: "Battles / Beverly. Ford. / Gettysburgh. [sic] / Falling Water. / Uperville. [sic] / Chancellorsville."
A fine ID disc inscribed to John A. Throne [Trone], a private from Franklin County, Pennsylvania who enlisted on 26 September 1862 into Company G of the 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The disc has Throne's name and regiment engraved as well as his regiment's battle honors.
The 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry was present at Gettysburg, aiding in the retreat of the XI Corps to Cemetery Hill, possibly suggesting the disc dates to late June of 1863.
