A 16-Bore Flintlock Brass-Mounted Holster Pistol By W. Turvey, London, Circa 1740 With barrel slightly flared towards the muzzle and with brass fore-sight, breech with border engraved tapering top flat signed in capitals and with foliate finial, border engraved tang decorated with a shell and foliage, border engraved rounded lock signed in capitals, border engraved cock (top jaw and screw replaced), moulded figured full stock (minor old bruising and split in the ramrod-channel) carved with a shell behind the barrel-tang, cast and chased mounts comprising pierced foliate side-plate involving a shell and centred on a vacant cartouche, escutcheon engraved with owner's monogram, a shell above and a satyr's mask below, spurred pommel with grotesque mask cap centred on a border of scrollwork, trigger-guard with early form of acorn finial and engraved with a large flower-head on the bow, turned baluster ramrod-pipes, and later wooden ramrod (barrel and lock with old light rust patination), London proof marks and Turvey's barrelsmith's mark 25.3 cm. barrel Footnotes: Provenance The Penrose Collection William 1 Turvey was apprenticed to Edward 1 Turvey in 1703.
