A 20-Bore Flintlock Holster Pistol By Edmund Giffard Of London, Late 17th Century With sighted barrel chiselled with acanthus forward of the breech, tang grooved for sighting, rounded lock signed in capitals (refreshed) and engraved with scrolling foliage on the tail and on the cock (top-jaw and screw replaced, steel refaced), moulded figured rootwood full stock (fore-end partly replaced, some old worming), brass mounts comprising side-plate cast, pierced and chased with a scrolling foliate monster, vacant foliate escutcheon with a mask above and below, border engraved spurred pommel with grotesque mask cap, trigger-guard (tang repaired) with foliate finial, turned ramrod-pipes (rear terminal replaced), and later wooden ramrod (old wear and pitting) 31.8 cm. barrel Footnotes: Edmund Giffard was free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1667 and was appointed Gunsmith-In-Ordinary to Charles II in 1670. He was in partnership with John Shaw as gunmakers to Prince Rupert at Whitehall between c.1675 and 1680.
