Roosevelt-Johnson Partial Progressive Party Ticket
Ticket/Invitation

A partial mailing card from the state of Pennsylvania endorsing Progressive Party candidates Theodore Roosevelt and Hiram Johnson. 1p, measuring 4.75" x 3", Pennsylvania, ca. 1912. The ticket boldly encourages the reader to "Let the People Rule" by voting for Roosevelt's Progressive Party against Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson. A list on verso states Roosevelt and Johnson's pledges for legislation, including an 8-hour work day and a national ban on child labor. The card has been cut so that its intended mailing address, as well as a portion of the paragraph at front lower right, has been exorcised. Exhibits moderate wear, including surface creasing, darkened toning and bumped corners throughout; isolated area of damp staining and foxing to top right corner of recto. Good to fair overall.

The Progressive Party was a third party in the United States formed in 1912 by Theodore Roosevelt. During its brief existence, the Party became known for taking advanced positions on progressive reforms and attracting leading national reformers. The U.S. presidential election, held on November 5, 1912, saw Roosevelt receive a total of 27% of the popular vote, well behind Wilson's 42%. Despite a rigorous campaign, the former president was ultimately handicapped due to having already served nearly two full terms, thus challenging the unwritten "no third term" rule. Nevertheless, this election would mark the best showing by any third party since the modern two-party system was established in 1864.
