From 1942, she was accredited by the US Army and took images of the Blitz. In the summer of 1944, she became a war correspondent for the US Army on the battlefields. Commissioned by Audrey Withers, her reports and photographs were published in the American magazine and its British edition. From 1944 to 1946, teaming up with David Sherman, a Life magazine photographer who was also her wartime lover, she followed the 83rd Division from the time it landed in France, to Paris, where she photographed her artist friends, and from Colmar in early 1945, a journey that took her as far as Romania, via Germany, Austria and Hungary. She arrived in Munich and spent a few days with Life correspondent David E. Scherman in Hitler s private flat at 16 Prinzregentenplatz. On the very day they arrived, 30 April 1945, the Fuhrer committed suicide in his Berlin bunker. During their stay, Scherman took one of his most famous photos of her, taking a nude but relatively modest bath in the dictator s personal bathtub, with a portrait of him by her side. She witnessed the burning of the Berghof. David E. Scherman A contributor to Life, he covered the Second World War as a correspondent for this magazine, working for a time alongside Lee Miller, a contributor to British Vogue. Condition II+.
