An Inlaid Iron Miniature Cabinet Modelled as a Shrine
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Worked throughout in typical Komai style of predominantly flat gold overlay with extensive use of kebori for the details, the structure raised on an integral square base beneath two typically sloping roofs, the upper roof with dragons, the lower roof with birds and ho-o birds in flight, fitted with a pair of hinged doors concealing four further drawers within decorated on the outside with butterflies and thatched buildings and seasonal flowers, the inside of the doors with swallows flying around irises, the edges with narrow bands of repeated geometric patterns and 16-petalled kiku mon (chrysanthemum crests), the underside engraved with an uguisu (warbler) among plum blossoms and signed Nihon Kyoto no ju Komai sei within a square seal beneath a dragonfly. 11.5cm x 6.5cm (4½in x 2½in).

The front left upper ridge of the upper roof ever slightly loose but easily rectified. Ever slight general wear with a few tiny surface scratches here and there on the plain undecorated sides of the roof. Very fine overall condition and excellent presentable order.
