Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast of Peru, Nazca, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A stone-burnished pottery bowl with a quartet of white-hued birds across the black-ground exterior, each facing towards the left and exhibiting lengthy necks with petite heads attached. In the Pre-Columbian world, birds had a special symbolic value as the indigenous believed they were sky animals that also served as messengers between humanity and their deities. Size: 6.625" L x 6.5" W x 2.9" H (16.8 cm x 16.5 cm x 7.4 cm)

Condition
Scattered pitting and light fading to original pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to original avian motif. Previous inventory number handwritten in gold-hued ink beneath base.
