Description
A two-piece outfit worn by Michael Jackson during a 1984 King-inspired photoshoot with photographer Matthew Rolston.
The two-piece medieval-inspired costume, made of a velvet pile brocade, features a doublet jacket and jodhpur pant. The primary fabric is a brocade that has a burgundy chenille pile with a metallic bronze-colored woven ground fabric, and the secondary fabric is a bronze-tone lamé which trims the hem of the pant legs as well as lining the slashed/paned sleeves and pant legs. The doublet mirrors medieval formal court attire with a Nehru neckline, metallic lace accents, and slashed/paned sleeves. The pants fall below the natural waistline and are cut wide at the upper leg then taper at the knee. The doublet and the jodhpurs have gold-tone metallic lace applique accents seen at the collar/neckline, epaulets, sleeve cuffs of the jacket, and the pant side seam. Both the garments have Warner Bros. costume labels with handwritten notations (DATE 10-16-47 PROD 691 NAME ROMNEY BRENT 2397), the pants have additional measurement notations, 30.5-inch waist, and a 12.5-inch knee opening. The metallic lace has been painted gold, there is excess paint that is currently seen on the brocade, unknown when the lace was painted. Both garments fasten with hook-and-eye closures.
In 1984, along with winning eight GRAMMYs in one night at the 26th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Feb. 28, 1984 (the first artist in history to do so), Jackson continued to break records as the first artist to receive two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the shoot, Jackson, who was later nicknamed the "King of Pop," is seen sporting a royal outfit, sourced from an original MGM production worn by actor Romney Brent. Together with a copy of the book "Hollywood Royale" by Matthew Rolston, featuring a photograph of Michael Jackson taken during the photo shoot.
Rolston, who was discovered by pop art icon Andy Warhol and later worked for prestigious publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, The New York Times, and Rolling Stone, and Jackson continued to work together on multiple shoots, and unintentionally became the final photographer to shoot Jackson in a formal setting.
Includes a calendar page/poster featuring Jackson wearing the outfit as well as a copy of the book Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles.
