Description

A forged iron currency of the Mumuye and Chamba peoples of West Africa, Nigeria. Shaped like a bundle of snakes emanating from a central trunk, this currency holds profound cultural and economic significance within the communities that produce and exchange it. The intricate design of the currency reflects the interconnectedness of nature and the spiritual world in West African belief systems. In addition to its symbolic value, this forged iron currency also served as a medium of exchange and a store of value within the local economy. Dates to the early or mid 20th century.
