Antique Book Titled: Illinois In 1837: A Sketch Descriptive Of The Situation, Boundaries, Face Of The Country. Author: Mitchell, S. Augustus. First Edition. Publishing Place: Philadelphia. Year: 1837. Small octavo, p. 144, large folding map. The second issue of Howes M693; see Graff 2840. In this copy, the ad on p. (144) is dated April 1838 in the lower left; then followed by an 8 pp. publisher's catalog for Griggs & Elliott. this is a very nice looking copy in a new binding of quarter-calf and marbled boards, with new endpapers; the sheets are very clean but show a previous owner's name stamp on p. 101. Quite some time ago the folding map was backed with cloth. some small clean fold splits were nicely brought together at the time of mounting; two gutter sections show slight darkening, and there is one marginal fore-edge chip about the size of a thumbnail. Condition: Very Good.
