The first issue was 252 pages in length; later in 1833 the publisher added an index, and the later issue is 267 pages. this distinction is not noted by Howes or in the Graff catalog. OCLC 14015134 locates only thirteen copies of the first edition. This is quite a decent copy, sturdy, straight, and sound. A conservator has rebacked the book, laying down the original spine cloth; has re-margined the bottom edge of the frontispiece and repaired a tear in one leaf. A prior owner has laid in a note at p. 102/03, noting that the typeset spelling of "Captain Wagin" is incorrect, and that the name should be "Haggin". The original tan muslin of the binding shows moderate general rubbing, and rather heavy uniform soiling. The tips are rubbed through, as are small areas of the board margins close to the spine on both ends. The sheets show scattered light foxing and browning throughout, and two leaves have short marginal tears. There is a pencil signature at the head of the preface leaf, and very faint occasional penciling on all endpapers. Condition: Good.
