Item Details
Description
Very Rare Miniature Redware Handled Jar, probably Great Road of Tennessee or Virginia origin, second or third quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, ribbed strap handles, and shoulder embellished with incised wavy line decoration. Exterior surface covered with a streaked and mottled manganese dioxide or iron oxide decoration. Interior and exterior surface covered in a clear lead glaze. A highly unusual and finely-executed miniature version of the distinctive jar forms produced along the Great Wagon Road of Southwestern Virginia and Eastern Tennessee. Similar examples attributed to members of the Cain family of Sullivan County, Tennessee can be found in the collection of the Rocky Mount Historical Museum in Piney Flats, Tennessee. A significant recent discovery in Southern redware. Excellent condition with a few minor rim nicks, two minuscule worn spots to one handle, and a very minor, possibly in-the-firing, base chip. H 3 1/8". ($1000-$1500)
