Item Details
Description
Rare Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Alkaline Glaze Marked "F.L.B.," Franklin L. Becham, Crawford County, GA, late 19th or early 20th century, ovoid jug with cylindrical spout and applied strap handles, decorated with a streaky greenish alkaline glaze. Impressed on top of one handle, "FLB", the maker's mark of Crawford County, Georgia potter, Franklin L. Becham. Shoulder of jug additionally incised with a "3" above a "4", probably indicating that Becham initially believed the jug he made was three gallons, only to realize it was a gallon larger. A striking example with wonderful wide-based, beehive form, colorful glazing, and desirable maker's mark. A particularly fine example of Crawford County, GA stoneware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in a thrift store. Excellent condition with minor wear. H 14 3/4". ($2000-$3000)
