This lot comprises one magnum bottle of 1989 vintage Château Pétrus from the Pomerol appellation in Bordeaux.

Pomerol is along with Saint-Émilion one of the best-known and most popular appellations on the right bank of the Gironde. In contrast to Médoc, the most widely used grape variety here is Merlot. The wines are more elegant and can be enjoyed sooner than the Cabernet Sauvignon blends but most do not have the same aging potential.

The 1989 vintage Château Pétrus was rated 100 points by Robert Parker in 2003. The wine was rated also 100 points by James Suckling in 2004. The wine was rated 20 of 20 points by René Gabriel in 2013.

The fill level is excellent (high fill). The label and capsule are in perfect condition.

Château Pétrus

A stone statue of St. Peter lends his name to one of the most famous vineyards in Bordeaux. The vineyards are located in the so-called buttonhole of Pétrus. The plateau of Pomerol consists mainly of gravel with a subsoil of clay. What is now Pétrus used to be the highest peak, ablated through erosion. Thus the layer of gravel and sand here is only one meter thick. This geological buttonhole spans 20 hectare with 11 hectare belonging to Pétrus. This constitutes Pétrus’s special case among the Pomerol wines. The layer of clay, rich in iron, provides Pétrus with its generous round richness, always dominated by the tannin and responsible for the truffle like aroma the wine acquires with age. The grapevines are over 40 years old; the yield varies between 15 and 45 hectare liters per hectare. The wine is stored exclusively in new barriques and is not filtered. There is no second wine.

The vineyard area spans merely 11.5 hectare which are planted with Merlot at 95% and Cabernet Franc at 5%. The use of grapes is decided after the harvest, Cabernet Franc is often not included. Thus Pétrus is a Merlot of a variety of grapevines, not a Cuvée. In the 1950s the portion of Cabernet Franc was still at 30%.
