AN ANTIQUE GREEK POLYCHROME TEMPURA PAINTED WOOD ICON OF ST. GEORGE SLAYING THE DRAGON, 19TH CENTURY, of rectangular form and centering the revered saint on horseback, wearing a billowing red cloak over traditional armor and slaying the red winged dragon with his long spear, amidst an idealized landscape with the grateful King holding keys to the city and standing with his maiden consort on a distant tower wall, while Mary and Jesus look on from corners of heavenly clouds, flanking a faded inscription, enclosed by a conforming parcel gilt border. Height: 9 3/4" Width: 8 5/8"
Condition
Good old condition with normal surface build up and wear throughout, paint cracquelure as well as raised "bubbled" areas, old restorations, minor chips, scratches, marks and age cracks, wood panel is slightly warped, Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
