Description
AN EXQUISITE SILVER GILT AND ENAMELED GOTHIC STYLE CHALICE, CIBORIUM AND CRUET SET, FRENCH, CIRCA 1912. Comprising a fully matched set including a chalice with multiple lobed base mounted with filigree decoration and with a turquoise champlevé enamel band rendered in Latin text CALICEM SALUTARIS ACCIPIAM ET NOMEN DOMINI INVOCABO (Psalm 116:13) I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord. The inverted cone-shaped base set with four medallions finely executed in Limoges enamel and depicting busts of Christ, the Virgin, Saint Vincent De Paul, and a Bishop Saint. The stem with large central bulbous node mounted with four medallions also rendered in Limoges enamel and depicting the symbols of the Four Evangelists beneath an ornate open filigree basket which holds the cup banded in champlevé enamel with the Latin text, ACCIPIAM CALIX SANGUIS MEI and set with four Limoges enamel medallions displaying images representing the virtues of Faith, Hope, Love and the Virgin and Child with red cabochons at each corner. The verso of the large polished paten centered with a Limoges enamel medallion depicting the Last Supper and banded with champlevé enamel, Latin text CARO MEA VERE EST CIBUS EST SANGUIS MEUS VERE EST POTUS (John 6:56) He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. Height 11.1 inches (28.4 cm ). Together with a matching ciborium replicating the chalice. The base banded in turquoise champlevé enamel text rendered in Latin, PANEM CAELESTEM ACCIPIAM, ET NOMEN DOMINI INVOCABO - I will take the Bread of Heaven, and call upon the Name of the Lord. The base with four Limoges enamel medallions depicting St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Vincent De Paul and a Bishop Saint. The central node also with Limoges enamel medallions with the symbols of the Four Evangelists. The cup banded in champlevé enamel text rendered in Latin, ET VERBUM CARO FACTUM EST, ET HABITAVIT IN NOBIS - And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and mounted with four Limoges enamel plaques depicting Christ, the Virgin, St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph. The ornate fitted cover with filigree decoration and a band champlevé enameled Latin text, HIC EST PANIS QUI DE CAELO DESCENDIT – This is the bread which cometh down from heaven. And set with four Limoges enamel medallions depicting busts of images representing the virtues of Faith, Hope and Love as well as the Apostle Saint Simon. The top with crown galley mounted with a cross finial. Height 13.25 inches (33.5 cm). Together with a matching cruet set comprising an ornate silver gilt tray with scalloped border set with filigree decoration and mounted with four Limoges enamel medallions depicting the Four Evangelists and a pair of matching crystal cruets with ornate silver –gilt mounts. The length of tray 11.25 inches (28.5 cm). The underside of each piece with dedicatory inscription dated May 3, 1912 and with French silver hallmarks (Minerva) and makers mark, a horizontal diamond with a snail between the letters P and J. Together with custom fitted leather cover case. Total weight 123.88 troy ounces. Exceptional.
