A LARGE IMPORTANT AND EXCEPTIONAL GILDED SILVER CHALICE AND PATEN, JOSEPH ADOLPHE PHILIPPE DEJEAN, PARIS, CIRCA 1860. The domed base with pierced undulating rim set with four finely sculpted angels between four reserves framed in finely repousséd grape vines and wheat, each sculpted in low relief with a different image above which is a champlevé enameled plaque rendered in Latin related to the scene below. The scenes and titles are as follows; Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane – ORATIO, Christ at the Last Super – GRATIAS, Christ before Pontius Pilate – OBLATIO, and Christ Crucified – PROPITIATIO. Rising up from the base, the central stem with large urn shaped node exquisitely sculpted with full length images of the Four Evangelists and their symbols beneath them. Above further still, an ornate pierced and sculpted basket holding a polished tulip form cup and with four reserves framed with scrolling foliage beneath cherub heads on either side. In low relief the images are; Saint John the Baptist, Christ the Good Shepherd, The Virgin and Child and St. Joseph and the Infant Christ. Together with the original imposing paten, the verso with a large medallion sculpted in low relief depicting the Coronation of the Virgin encircled with a beaded border framed with ribbon tied acanthus. The surface in both matte and burnished finishes. Hallmarked with French silver mark (Minerva) and with maker’s mark of Dejean (Horizontal diamond with the name DEJEAN below an anchor and above a star). Height 13.25 inches (33.4 cm). Total weight 60.67 troy ounces. Exquisite!
