Description
Uniform of his Royal Highness Ernst, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg – as Chief of Silesian Jager Battalion No. 6. Uniform consists of: (1) Fine green doeskin material with red cuffs, piping down front and 2" standup collar. Eight domed age-toned gilt buttons and two on each cuff. Dress epaulettes with stationary silver spring wire fringe and a gilt brass crescent – surrounding silver crossed Fieldmarshall batons and a gilt number "6" with three large gilt "pips". Thread loops on left breast for a 6" ribbon bar and six pin-back awards. Red piped "split" skirt with six domed gilt buttons. Black silk lining with white silk lined sleeves. Embroidered label "Deutscher Offizier – Verein" and a label with the number "1752". Inner cloth belt, with a small metal buckle. "Split" to accommodate a sword hanger, under left pocket flap. (2) Dark blue doeskin breeches, with two 1 7/8" wide stripes. Underside of pocket lining is stamped with a crown over a cypher "E". Several old tailor repairs on inside of leg. Three buttons on each tapered bottom. (3) Prussian gala dress belt – with large silver tassels. Lining is stamped with the crown/cypher "E". (4) General's Jager shako. Dark blue felt body with two screen side vents. Black patent leather top and visors. Gilt Prussian eagle frontplate and chinscales. Prussian officer rosettes and silver bullion/black insert cockade. "Split" type blue silk lining, with a gilt crown/cypher "E". Inside of helmet has a fabric intricate crowned shield bearing the arms of Saxe-Altenburg. (5) General's black/white feather bush for the Jager helmet. With the original cardboard storage cylinder bearing a large label with the crown/cypher "E" insignia. (Duke Ernst was born in 1826 and entered the Prussian Army in 1847. In 1851, as a Premier Lt., he was posted to the 1st Prussian Guard of Foot in Potsdam. Interested in military innovations, he worked to help with the adoption of needle fire rifles. Ernst served in the 1864 war with Denmark and, as a general, in the Franco-Prussian War with the 6th Jager Battalion. 1886 marked his 25th year as Chief of Jager Battalion 6. In 1897 he received the honorary rank of General Fieldmarshall and was entitled to wear the crossed Fieldmarshall's batons on his shoulder boards – in addition to his rank of Generaloberst. Duke Ernst was also known for his interest and promotion of social and cultural projects. He died in 1908.) A historical set.
