Item Details
Description
Mid 19th century, 108 x 107 cm, North West Anatolia

This small square rug, a particularly beautiful example of its group, was woven in the surroundings of Bergama in one of the villages settled by the Yagcibedir. Very finely woven from superb wool and free from synthetic dyes, it is one of the truly old pieces of this type. The rug used to be a kiz, i.e. the bride’s wedding present to her groom. This explains its excellent quality. Herrmann has published an analogous example and traces the design back to Transylvanian carpets. – Very well preserved.
